Hangout @ Mt. Emily, Singapore
Simplicity & comfort is at the core of this hostel/hotel. The rooms (some dorms, some private with ensuite) are clean, simple and modern. Staff are cheerful & helpful and breakfast and wifi is included in the low room rates.
A comfy common area with TV and free tea & coffee, a quiet & leafy setting and a fantastic rooftop terrace with a shower pool to splash about in.
The walk uphill is pleasant, but tiring. The rooms are a bit plain. Some rooms don’t have windows.
Y-loft (Youth Square), Hong Kong
The rooms are large (particularly by Hong Kong standards), well designed, modern, well equipped, sound-proofed, clean & comfortable and really excellent value. Some rooms have balcony’s while others offer great views of the local neighbourhood.
We loved the hot, power shower, free Wifi and spaciousness in the room. The rooftop running track is awesome!
A 30 minute MTR ride to the sights but the hotel and local area more than makes up for this.
Courtyard @ Heeren, Malacca
A beautiful & unique hotel, complemented by brilliant staff, lots of included amenities and a perfect location. Rooms are spacious, bright, clean and nicely furnished. Public areas are simply beautiful.
The rain shower was excellent. Staff are really eager to please. The included breakfast is plentiful and frankly superb. Rates are very low indeed.
The free Wifi was a bit unreliable. Otherwise, we’re struggling to find anything we didn’t like.
A selection of our favourite Hotels in Europe.
Bergland Hotel, Salzburg
This family-run, centrally-located hotel offers individually designed rooms, a continental breakfast and plenty of artwork and artifacts to peruse. Prices are good and wifi is free.
Each room is decorated in a unique style with plenty of personal touches. We really like the old, wooden explorer’s writing desk and the antlers on the wall in our room.
The centre is close, but still a 10-15 minute walk away. Really not a deal breaker.
Ibis Styles, Liverpool
Despite being one of chain, this hotel offers uniquely designed rooms with a Beatles theme. There are around 6 different designs, all bold, colourful and modern. Free breakfast and wifi included.
The rooms are small, but the design makes up for it. We loved staying here.
Fittings in the room were a little bit cheap and plasticky. The bathroom is pre-fab – it feels a bit like you’re in a caravan.
Hotel Katajanokka, Helsinki
It’s not easy to forget this hotel is housed in a former prison. Low doors, staff wearing stripy jumpers, and rooms in former cells add a special ambiance. Attractions are a 10-15 minutes walk away.
The nods to the building’s former life (e.g. iron gates and staircases) are a great touch. Rooms are really cosy. Free Gym and Sauna on weekends.
The walls are so thick, there’s no Wifi in the rooms. There is though in public areas.
How We Rate Our Stays
We rate our stays according to the following criteria:
- Location – Is the property within a reasonable distance from attractions?
- Neighbourhood – Is the property situated somewhere pleasant and safe?
- Design – Are the rooms nicely designed?
- Service – Are service staff friendly and helpful?
- Wifi – Is the Wifi fast and free?
- Add-Ons – Are there tea/coffee making facilities and toiletries included?
- Facilities – Is there an on-site swimming pool, restaurant, laundry etc.?
- Sleep – Is the bed comfortable and the room quiet & dark enough for a good night’s sleep?
- Overall feeling – What was our general instinctive feeling whilst staying at the property?
Each criterion is rated out of five, five being a top mark. We then add our scores together and divide them by 9 to calculate an overall average (mean) rating.
Some of the ratings on this page have additional icons associated with them. Here’s a guide to what they mean.
We love it here!
We can’t quite put our finger on why (probably a combination of reasons), but we particularly liked staying here.
More than once!
This property is so good, we’ve stayed here more than once.
